We are living in changing times in terms of  climate, economy, values and political correctness. The pace of daily living has quickened exponentially due to our demands to survive and meet our needs. Each people, generation and society has always inherited something from their forebears. This includes folklore, language, diet, culture, land, literature and even music.

In our modern-day society, the very things that we have been made to be custodians of has also led to utter waste and desecration. Take for example, beautiful parcels of land, that once had lush vegetation, trees and natural flowing water and because of ‘capitalism’, these were quickly cleared and torched down bringing in its wake tall buildings and concrete walls to house our increasing human population. For the developer this is money in the bank every month but to our future children what are we preserving?

Another area to draw your attention to are the roadways and highways that are being erected in areas that house our heritage of wild animals and safari’s. We are getting into a situation where because of human encroachment these same animals are coming out with anger and fury at us wondering what we are doing to them and in the process they are causing us harm and we are also ‘firing’ or ‘spearing back’. A lot needs to be changed in terms of our perceptions, attitudes and thinking when it comes to what inheritance we are leaving behind for the next generation.

I’m of the school of thought that we should plant more trees, preserve our natural forests and valleys. If we have more than we need in terms of money or clothing or food then we should save it and store it for another day when an emergency occurs. The attitude of living only once should be replaced with leaving a bright legacy of hope for future generations. I am not advocating for people to be misers and stingy with what they have- absolutely not. I am just stating that we should enjoy the fruits of our labors but also strike a balance and look far ahead into the future.
