We are facing a ticking time bomb in our society of a neglected, confused and forgotten boy child. In a coming day, if we don’t put in place mitigation efforts we will be bound to reap the whirlwind.
It is time to focus time, resources and effort on saving this ‘lost’ generation before it is too late. I am grateful that the girl child has received satisfactory attention, focus, education and increased opportunities than hitherto before. However, now is the opportune time to invest in the ‘boy’ child before we lose him to this unforgiving world.
There are indications already of the effects on these boys’. They can’t communicate effectively when measured against their peers in job interviews. They can hardly focus on one given assignment and complete it successfully. They prefer keeping long hair and wearing earrings because they lean more towards their feminine side. Absentee fathers are also to blame for this unfortunate predicament.
I am still optimistic that we can save this generation. This can be done by encouraging fathers to take up their rightful place in the home as mentors and leaders. These boys’ need to feel valued, wanted and important despite the current state of variance with their peers.
If you have a younger brother please show support and be considerate. Give them assignment and duties to perform. As this will entrench a spirit of responsibility and accountability.
This will go a long way to provide the much needed moral support. It’s also important that other stakeholders such as parents, teachers and religious leaders work to fill in the gaps so that we can once more raise a generation of men. Men, who are responsible, hardworking and contributing members of society.
